Job Summary
The Library at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary seeks an experienced and forward-thinking Head of Technical Services to provide leadership and strategic direction for the library’s acquisitions, cataloging, metadata, and electronic resources management operations.
Job Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and direct the work of the Technical Services Department. This includes overseeing acquisitions, collection development, serials, electronic resources, cataloging, and processing and repair of all library materials.
- Ensure that appropriate materials of all types are acquired and properly processed in a well-organized, efficient, and timely manner so that they are available to the faculty, students, and other users of the library.
- Ensure that the work of Technical Services is coordinated with other library units and supports the work of the Public Services and Archives Departments by providing accurate, complete, and current cataloging of all materials in the library.
- Seelect, train, and supervise technical and professional staff of the Technical Services Department.
- Ensure the complete and proper cataloging of all library materials according to authoritative international standards for maximum discoverability by library users.
- Ensure that all materials are labeled and prepared for integration into the library collection.
- Supervise the maintenance and improvement of the library’s online catalog and authority records.
- Oversee the selection and acquisition of all types of materials for the library collection in coordination with library staff.
- Assist in developing and evaluating policies for library procedures as well as accreditation requirements.
Educational/Experiential Requirements
Required:
- Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles of cataloging, classification and subject analysis and the international standards used, including Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Resource Description & Access (RDA), and MARC21.
- Knowledge of methods of collection development and acquisition.
- Analytical abilities to solve complex problems regarding cataloging, collection development, serials management, and acquisitions.
- Excellent personnel management skills
Preferred:
- An additional master’s degree in a theological field.
- At least 3 years’ experience working in technical services in areas of increasing responsibility
- At least 2 years’ management experience
